Pacquiao vs Horn will lay his WBO welterweight title on the line this Sunday, when he travels to Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium to defend his crown against undefeated Australian Jeff Horn.

The clash Down Under has Pacquiao slated as an overwhelming favourite, but Horn will be hopeful of staking a strong claim at stardom in what is unequivocally the biggest matchup of his career to date.

Pacquiao is guaranteed a hefty pay day in Brisbane and is reportedly fighting for a $10 million (£7.9 million) purse, according to Grantlee Kieza of the Courier Mail. That is around 20 times the amount his opponent is due to make.

Kieza explained elsewhere that Horn will receive $500,000 for the bout, although it’s understood an increase in ticket sales means the home fighter is liable to rake in a larger paycheque.

    Preview

Like a story straight from Hollywood, former school teacher Horn will have a major opportunity to put his name on the elite boxing map when he takes on Pacquiao in front of a home audience.

But regardless of how much one might favour a dark horse, he takes on one of boxing’s most methodical minds in Pacquiao, who will be facing a relative unknown at the top level, via the Courier Mail:

With his WBO welterweight belt and a massive prize pot on the line, one would think a figure as experienced as Pac-Man will treat the bout with as much reverence as he has any other in a career stretching back more than two decades.

And the Filipino icon suggested as much when touching on his preparations for Sunday’s matchup, insisting he has no intentions of allowing a shock, per AFP (h/t Sky Sports): “In all my years of boxing, I have never been as motivated and fired up as this fight. My team is very happy with my preparation. I am looking forward to this, and I will be going home as world champion.”

Older though he may be, it’s been just over a year since Pacquiao defeated Timothy Bradley to win the then-vacant WBO crown, and many would argue the American to be a superior to the less-seasoned Horn.

Pacquiao vs Horn airs Live on Main Event Fight Nights.com highlighted other high-profile meetings between stars of differing experience:

While Horn may enter the ring as the underdog, The Hornet can take heart in his chances after Kieza of the Courier Mail explained he’s likely to take a significant seven-kilogram weight advantage into the bout.

Pacquiao is naturally much closer to the weight limit of 66.7 kilograms and is “already under the weight at about 65 kilograms,” while Horn is expected to be as heavy as 72 kilograms come fight time.

That being said, Horn’s advantage in size could also become a burden in time, with Pacquiao’s speed hard to keep up with for those with longer limbs, which he recently showed off via his official Facebook page:

There’s also the factor of age, and although Pac-Man has won both of his last two fights, he’s set to turn 39 at the end of the year and has gone the distance in each of his last nine victories. That could pose some issues against the 29-year-old Horn, whose conditioning could be an advantage, albeit a slight one.

Horn boasts an unblemished record of 16-0-1, but he’s yet to fight outside his native land and likely will fall off the pace in the later single-digit rounds, although a unanimous-decision win for Pacquiao still seems the most likely route.
